Ford turned to the Sierra to replace the RS at the top level after the demise of Group B at the end of so required a production car that could be homologated under Group A. The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was chosen for tarmac rallies along with it's 4wd counterpart the XR4x4 for the gravel rallies but the XR4x4 was too underpowered and couldn't compete with the other cars.

The car appears to be the 7 driven by Juha Kankkunen, who achieved a 4th place finish in the Drivers' Championship of the WRC season. Ford's intention was to race this car in the World Rally Championship, but people couldn't believe their eyes when they saw what was under the bonnet instead of the transversely mounted engine of the base RS, the engine was mounted longitudinally in the RSCosworth. Ford decided to mount the engine in this way in order to gain advantage over their strongest rival, the Lancia Delta. Airflow into the engine bay is also enhanced, giving an advantage in terms of cooling as well. However, from on, the team was fraught with troubles. Although the RS Cosworth still show bursts of great speed it failed to translate into victories.
